Our First Policy Summit: A Recap
On July 31, RPAC hosted something we've never done before: a full Policy Summit. For one morning, LiUNA! Local 242 in Des Moines was filled with contractors, apprentices, elected officials, union leaders, and community partners — all in the same room, talking about what it really takes to build a career in the trades.
We couldn't have pulled this off without our sponsors, LiUNA Local 242 and North Coast States Carpenter's Union, who not only supported the event but opened their doors and gave us a firsthand look at where the next generation of tradespeople trains.
What the Day Looked Like
The morning centered on panel discussions featuring apprentices, contractors, and policy leaders speaking honestly about the barriers people face getting into, and staying in construction careers. Topics ranged from childcare access to training standards to what real support services look like on the ground. We also took a guided tour of the LiUNA training facility, and shared a meal together, because some of the best conversations happen over lunch.
What Stood Out
The response from everyone who attended told us this was worth doing again. Nearly all of our attendees said they'd recommend the summit to a colleague, and the thing people mentioned most was hearing directly from apprentices and craftworkers about their own experiences — not statistics, not talking points, just real stories.
Elected officials showed up too, which meant the conversations in the room weren't just informative, they were a chance to hold the people who shape policy directly accountable to the work RPAC is doing.
